message from the Gospel of Matthew
After His time in
the wilderness, Jesus began touring different cities in Israel, preaching
to strangers everywhere: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." This
became His tag line, His condensed message.
Repent means to change your course - to stop going in the direction you
are headed, and begin moving in a new direction. But His message is deeper
still: repent BECAUSE the kingdom of heaven is near. Maybe these people
have repented lots of times - to no avail. It didn't stick. They always
ended up back in the same sinful habits and spiritual ruts. But Jesus was
telling them there was a new deal now. Repenting worked now! Why? Because
the kingdom of heaven was near.
